The location
The conference venue is The University of New South Wales, a modern
university of 22,000 students located in Sydney, Australia's oldest and
largest city - renowned for its harbour and beaches and acclaimed as
one of the world's great cities.
The University is conveniently located in a residential area 6 km from the city centre and 8 km from the airport (both 15 mins by taxi). It is close to Sydney Harbour, its famous Opera House and the many Pacific Ocean beaches.
There is excellent public transport available to all parts of the city and there are many restaurants, representing cuisines from many countries, within convenient walking distance from the University as well as university food outlets.
Sydney is the most influential city in the Oceanic region and is uniquely located in relation to South East Asia. It is an attractive, cosmopolitan city of 3 million people from all parts of the globe. It is a safe, friendly, popular tourist destination, Sydney is the site of the Olympic Games in the year 2000.
July in Sydney is mid-winter. For overseas visitors intending to visit the interior of the country or the Great Barrier Reef, winter is an ideal time to visit Australia.

Visa Requirements. Important!
Note that all visitors to Australia MUST get a visa. The only
exception is New Zealand. Applications for an Australian visa should
be made to your nearest Australian Embassy or Consulate in your
country. Your Australian visa will not permit you to be employed in
Australia or to become a permanent resident.
John Clark writes:
It is now almost ridiculously easy to get a visa to Australia.
For a long list of countries it is no longer necessary to
send your passport and application to a Consulate in order
to get a visa. In the U.S., all one needs to do is call the
Australian tourist office connected with QANTAS, 1-800-227-4632,
give the person your flight and passport information, and it's
all over within 2 minutes! Your data is entered and ready to
be called up when you check in with Quantas (or presumably any
other airline you happen to be flying on).
Incidentally, I told the woman who answered that I am traveling
to Australia to attend a conference. She said that I need
a business visa for that -- which worried me but she quickly
went on to say that she had already entered approval for
a business visa for 3 months.
Information from British Airways: Visa Service in Seconds
