The Joint Australian Centre for Astrophysical Research in Antarctica (JACARA), the Center for Astrophysical Research in Antarctica (CARA) and the National Optical Astronomy Observatories (NOAO) announce the availability of telescope time on the SPIREX/Abu facility at the South Pole. This is a 60 cm aperture telescope with a 1024 x 1024 InSb detector array. Approximately 20% of the time during the next austral winter (March through October) will be made available to the Australian astronomical community through a peer-review process. 30% of the time is being made available to the US astronomical community through the same peer-review process.
Proposals are due Midnight on February 28th, 1999.
All observing will be queue observing, including scheduling, the data pipeline, and the transfer of data to investigators. Data are returned from the South Pole over a NASA-maintained satellite link which runs for a few hours a day (when the satellite is visible from the pole). All South Pole experimenters are very grateful to NASA networking and the South Pole TDRSS Relay team for this service.
Access to the SPIREX/Abu facility has been made possible for Australian
astronomers by the support of the Major National Research Facilities program
and the University of New South Wales.
