A sequence of webcam images over a 30 minute period showing the arrival of the 26th CHINARE inland traverse team at Dome A, Antarctica, on 6 January 2010 after a 20 day, 1220 km, journey from Zhongshan Station on the coast. This is only the fourth time that humans have visited Dome A.

The green box is the PLATO Engine Module, containing six deisel engines running on 4000 litres of jet-fuel. The webcam is on top of the Instrument Module, 50 metres away. Shadows from solar panels are visible at the right of the image. The shadows at the bottom are from Iridium satellite aerials. The structure half-way towards the Engine Module was a bamboo tower with ribbons attached that was used to give a simple indication of wind strength and direction. It worked for about 8 months, and then broke during a period of strong wind.

Power is transmitted from the Engine Module to the Instrument Module at 150VDC. The high voltage minimizes transmission losses.

The webcam is made by Watec and can operate down to -80C.
