In 2001 I was awarded the University Medal for Computer Engineering by the University of New South Wales, and by 2004 I completed Masters degrees in biomedical engineering and information technology. I am currently a principal engineer at Cochlear Limited. In 2010 I completed an industry-based PhD, with UNSW, on cochlear implants and machine intelligence. I was the chief designer of AutoNRT™, Cochlear's first commercial artificial intelligence application, and conducted further research into the function and application of the auditory nerve response. In 2006 I was named Engineers Australia's National Young Professional Engineer of the Year for career achievement and involvement in engineering and community affairs. In 2007 I toured Australia at the invitation of the Institution, speaking at professional events, in 2008 I was Master of Ceremonies for Young Engineers Australia's largest ever event, the YEA National Summit, and in 2010 I was named as one of Australia's most inspiring young engineers.
