ABSTRACT:
We analyze the exchange interactions between Co-ions in a triangular lattice of layered cobaltates. The low-energy effective Hamiltonian supports a variety of magnetic states depending on the lattice distortion and spin-orbit coupling. The magnetism of sodium-rich compounds Na(1-x)CoO2 will be discussed in terms of a spin-orbital polaron liquid.
