THIRD YEAR LABORATORY

EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICS A1, A2
PHYS 3040, 3070

Syllabus PHYS3040, 3070, 3110 and 3120 Experimental Physics A1, A2, B1 and B2

These level III physics general experimental courses involve 4 hours per week in the laboratory, in sessions 1 and 2 respectively. They include experiments selected from a wide range of topics in physics. The third year laboratory functions, as far as practicable, as an "open" laboratory where students may come in at various times to work through experiments at their own pace. Some experiments may be extended into longer projects by interested students. Assessment is continuous with no end-of-session examination.

These experimental courses, apart from illustrating some of the concepts presented in level II and III physics lectures and allowing students to become acquainted with new instruments and techniques, try to encourage a critical attitude towards scientific enquiry by promoting an awareness of the limitations of apparatus, techniques and theories. Student skills in the clear communication of observations and technical concepts, both orally and in writing, are also further developed.

The concepts and techniques encountered in this laboratory, are widely employed in the physical sciences as well as finding use in fields as diverse as archaeology and zoology. The training in the practice of "scientific method" offered in these subjects makes them of interest to students from a variety of scientific disciplines.
