A Warm Day
Today was a really warm day, the temperature around -29 degrees. It seems our definition of warm and cold weather has changed down here, Jon will understand quite well that if I say it's cold out today it means it's windy and the wind chill is in the -50's to -60's. Whereas on a "warm" day we can almost work up a sweat walking out to the AASTINO. Due to the warm weather, the temperature in the AASTINO has been getting up to 32 degrees - which I hear is higher than the current temperature in Sydney. So here we are, working in Antarctica in t-shirts - Jon is threatening to bring out his board shorts.
I put some lights up today in the AASTINO - another engineering masterpiece using the jigsaw. "These people have 24 hours of daylight, why do they need more light?", I hear you ask. The lights are not for our benefit but for the winterover scientist, Karim, so he can come into the AASTINO every so often and check the aliens haven't stolen any instruments. The electricians at Concordia Station kindly supplied us with some switches and mains cable to wire the lights up. We are also going to install a switch to turn off the ceiling fan that is in the middle of the AASTINO, with blades conveniently located about head height.
This evening we played a game of billiardo with a French and an Italian man. Between the three languages we managed to all play by the roughly the same set of rules. My game is still cause for the amusement of others, although I did manage to fluke one or two good shots.
We found out today that Jon has been promoted to Lecturer and I clearly explained to him that although his lofty new position DOESN'T mean he can boss me around more, it DOES mean that the beer shouts are on him in Hobart.
