Accommodation Options

The Research Station has a range of facilities to cater for individuals and groups engaged in education or research at the station.

  • The tarrifs are indicative and may be changed without notice.
  • UNSW staff and students receive a special rate on tariffs.
  • Visitors from other institutions and the general public pay a modest premium on UNSW rates by negotiation.
  • International groups will be managed by the Study Abroad office of New South Global. Residencies for artists (e.g. Res Artis) will be negotiated by the Imaging the Landscape International Research Institute (contact Juliana O'Dean).
  • Rates for commercial visitors (e.g. film crews) will likewise be negotiated and include a charge to access the property.
  • Visitors must self-cater and bring their own food (the nearest large shopping centre is Broken Hill).

A quotation on your accommodation needs can be obtained by contacting the Station Director or by completing and submitting an information request.  If the purpose of your visit is eco-tourism then please use the booking form. All bookings should be made with the Station Director. Contact details are given at the bottom of this form. All rates are inclusive of GST if applicable.
Please note:
There is no camping allowed on the property, exceptions may be made within the homestead complex for very large groups.

Dormitory: Accommodation for large groups is provided in a 32-bed dormitory, partitioned into two large sleeping rooms, each with toilets and showers. Communal kitchen and eating facilities front the bedrooms. A laundry is at the rear.

Shearers Quarters: Accommodation for medium-sized groups is provided in the Quarters. Eating facilities and bathroom are communal. Bedrooms have two single beds with electric blankets. The facility has ducted evaporative cooling for summer. A large space to seat up to 100 is available for seminars, conferences, teaching and workshops. AV facilities including digital project can be supplied.Flat: A self-contained flat is available on the southern side of the quarters.

Cottage 5: Accommodation for short-stay small groups is provided in a 4-bedroom cottage with bathroom, kitchen and laundry facilities. The cottage has ducted evaporative cooling for summer.

Cottage 3/4: Accommodation for long-term researchers (eg. postgraduate, honours or practicum students; or academic staff on study leave) if provided in two fully equipped 2-bedroom cottages. One has an additional 2-bed demountable room and caravan.

The Ochre House Artist's Retreat: The Ochre House is situated in a remote gorge on the Station. The building is a single large space with bathroom and toilet facilities partitioned off and a generous balcony with gas barbecue. The House is powered by a 12V hybrid wind/photovoltaic system and has a recycling system for waste management.
