Survey of Spirals (SOS) Home Page

Overview

We are observing a sample of around 50 spiral galaxies in the 115 GHz transition of CO 1->0. The purpose of this preliminary survey is to select a sample of galaxies for future observations in the dense molecular gas tracers HNC, N2H+ and HCO+ which will be available with the new MOPS filterbank and MMIC receiver combination. An immediate scientific goal of our survey is to test the tight linear correlation inferred by Gao & Solomon (2004, ApJ., 606, 271) between the total mass of dense molecular gas in a galaxy and global star formation efficiency. In addition, the catalogues generated from this project will be useful for planning future ALMA observations.
