Dear Colleague,

The University of New South Wales is organising a meeting to take place in Kingston (near Hobart, Tasmania), which will focus on the opportunities offered by the new French-Italian Concordia Station under construction at Dome C, Antarctica, 75S latitude, 123E longitude, 3250 m above sea level.

The station should be opened for winter-over in year 2003 and is expected to offer unparalleled observing conditions at Infrared and sub-millimeter wavelengths.

This meeting follows the two previous meetings held in Casaccia, Italy and Nice, France. It is open to all scientists, logistics personnel and engineers interested in promoting astrophysics at Dome C or wishing to share their experiences and results obtained with other astronomical facilities operating in Antarctica.

We intend to publish refereed proceedings of the workshop in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia.

A roundtable with presentations and discussions about logistics issues for the astronomical community operating at Dome C will also take place.

The emphasis of the meeting will be on:

  • New results from site testing and Antarctic astronomy
  • Instruments and experiments - planned and under development
  • Infrastucture and logistics for Antarctic astronomy
  • Dome Concordia: a new opportunity
  • How to develop the scientific potential of Antarctica

Trade exhibition
An exhibition of companies involved in Antarctic logistics, and sponsoring the meeting will be organized at the Australian Antarctic Division during the workshop. For more information, contact Paolo G. Calisse or Jon Everett.

Travel
Special deals exist with some airlines whereby Hobart can be included in a Europe-Australia or USA-Australia round trip for no additional cost. If you are thinking of bringing your family, please contact us for help with any requirements and the organisation of activities for your children.

Instructions for submission of papers to PASA from the Third International Workshop on Astrophysics at Dome C conference
The refereed proceedings from the Astrophysics at Dome C conference will be published in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia (PASA). PASA is an ISI listed journal and papers in electronic PASA are directly linked to from the Astrophysics Data Service. The electronic version of the journal is accessible from here. Note that two referees are used for all PASA papers. Please prepare your paper using the PASA LaTeX template accessible from here.
Please take note of the instructions given in the PASA LaTeX template, especially those regarding the style files that can be used. Please try and keep the length of your paper to less than eight pages of the PASA LaTeX template, including figures and references. We are aiming for rapid publication of the workshop proceedings. To submit your manuscript, please email a postscript file of your paper to the conference editors. If your paper is too large to be included as an email attachment, please place the postscript file of your paper on an anonymous ftp site and send instructions on how to extract the paper to the editors at the above address. Please note that this procedure is different to that given in the usual Instructions to Authors for PASA papers, but we are using electronic submission to aid rapid refereeing and processing of these workshop papers. If you are asked to referee a paper from the workshop, please try to prepare a report as soon as possible, and definitely within three weeks of receiving the manuscript.

Please submit your manuscript as soon as possible and no later Than 27th of July 2001.
