A general purpose PC is located in the the astrophysics area near the tea table. The following peripherals are attached. Most devices are labeled with basic instructions on how to use them.
- The colour printer (p132)
Specialty papers and ink can be obtained from Rm132.
Colour transparencies can be obtained from the store (although there is currently some available next to the printer)
- Scanner
Use photoshop to manipulate scanned images and documents
- Dat drive
A DDS 3 dat drive is attached to the general purpose PC. This is the dat drive that used to be on the server bat.
It is best to access it via linux although access via cywin in windows is also possible.
Before extracting data you need to set the block size using the command:
You may then extract data using the tar command:
The MT set of commands may be helpful
- to rewind: mt -f /dev/st0/ rewind
- to skip forward one tar file: mt -f /dev/st0 fsf 1
- tp skip back one tar file: mt -f /dev/st0 bsf
More information on tar and mt can be found in the manual page (eg man tar). Data must then be scp'd/sftp'd to astro or wink for analysis.
- Dual layer DVD writer
DVD's are not available from the store and must be purchased beforehand
- CDRW
CD-R's/CD-RW's are available from the store.
This PC has the following software installed:
- Photoshop CS
- Adobe Acrobat Professional (enables you to create and edit PDF's)
- Office 2000
- Dreamweaver MX
