Research Interests
Our work involves the investigation of the magnetic behaviour and magnetic structures of a variety of materials using techniques such as 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, neutron diffraction and depolarisation, muon spin relaxation (mSR), ac-susceptometry and thermal analysis (thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry). We study both crystalline, nanocrystalline and amorphous materials including:
(i) rare-earth (R) intermetallics,
(ii) Fe-based spin-glasses and nanocomposites and
Most of the samples in (i) and (ii) are prepared at UNSW using a combination of argon-arc melting and melt-spinning.
Our work is predominantly experimental, with much work being carried out at major facilities both here in Australia (HIFAR nuclear reactor, Lucas Heights) and Overseas (nuclear reactors in Chalk River, Canada, and Berlin, Germany). Our mSR work is carried out at the TRIUMF cyclotron (the world's largest) in Vancouver, Canada.
We are also carrying out computer modelling of the magnetic exchange and crystal field interactions in R-Fe based intermetallics in an attempt to understand the many temperature-driven spin-reorientations (i.e. changes in the magnetic structure) and nuclear hyperfine interactions exhibited by some of these compounds.
