Some Honours Students

WendyWendy Pan completed her Honours in 1999
The instrument pictured is called a Stratocaster (etymology unknown). Wendy's thesis was an examination of the transfer functions of the electric guitar. Although the guitar is one of the most widely played instrument in the world, there had been little scientific investigation of the subtle ways in which it transforms mechanical vibrations into electrical signals. Wendy next year will be completing the law components of her Science/Law degree at UNSW.

JessicaJessica Dempsey completed her Honours in 1999
The instrument pictured is called the SUMMIT (Submillimetre Tipper). The SUMMIT is a photometer which measures the "sky brightness", or the emission from the atmosphere, at 350 microns, or 0.35 millimetres. This instrument will be installed at South Pole station, Antarctica, where it will be run remotely from Sydney for the entire winter of the year 2000. The instrument makes up part of the AASTO experiment being conducted by the University of NSW.

TimTim Byrnes completed his Honours in 1998. One of his Honours Thesis involved calculating the enhancement factor of the electron electric Dipole moment (EDM) in heavy atoms. The enhancement factor is a measure of the ratio between the atomic EDM and the electron EDM. By calculating the enhancement factor using theoretical techniques, and combining it with experimental results, one is able to determine the EDM of the electron. The importance of calculating the EDM of the electron is that it is a direct example of CP-violation, an important phenomenom occurring in particle physics.

ElizabethElizabeth O'Connor is annotating an acoustical impedance spectrum. Her first session honours project investigated multiphonics (chords) in the flute. Multiphonics are linear superpositions of different modes in the resonator, but they generate heterodyne components in the (non linear) control oscillator at frequencies which match extrema in the impedance spectrum.
Elizabeth finished her honours degree in 1998. In 1999 she completed a Diploma of Education at UNSW and in 2000 she will be teaching physics at Sydney Girls High School.
