The Defence Science and Technology Organisation
(DSTO) and the Australian Institute of Physics (AIP) introduced
a new scholarship in 2006 to support Australia's best young
physicists. The scholarships were established in part to
celebrate the Einstein International Year of Physics in 2005.
(Einstein published four revolutionary ideas in 1905 at the
very young age of 26.)
The scholarship scheme was designed to run for three years,
with two scholarships awarded each year. These were to be
awarded to students entering their honours year in physics
and the two winners were selected from universities across
Australia, based on the applicant’s academic record
and their motivation to study physics.
One of the two inaugural winners in 2006 was Yakov Kulik, from
the School of Physics at UNSW. He had completed a combined
Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Arts degree before undertaking
honours in Physics. Yakov completed projects in theoretical
physics as part of his honours year, and was awarded first
class honours and a university medal at the end of 2006. |
