| Students
and staff in the Laser Laboratory, as part of the graduate programs
in photonics |
In 2001, the
School of Physics began offering a range of postgraduate programs
in photonics and optoelectronics by course-work. Our programs provide
a thorough theoretical and laboratory based training in the relevant
areas, taught by experts from the School of Physics and the School
of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications. UNSW is the only
university in Australia that offers postgraduate coursework qualifications
in this area.
This year 30
students enrolled in the various programs that range from the Graduate
Certificate to the Masters degree. Four full time students have
already graduated: two with Graduate Certificates, one with a Graduate
Diploma and one with a Masters of Science. Many of the part time
students will complete their courses in 2002.
Our postgraduate
coursework degrees are designed for people with an undergraduate
degree in science or engineering who are interested in a career
in photonics or want to upgrade their skills in this emerging technology.
While most of our students either come from the photonics industry
or are trying to get into it, a number of students in these courses
are interested in optoelectronics for reasons other than telecommunications,
such as medical research, optical physics or manufacturing. Because
of increasing interest from around Australia and overseas, starting
from 2002 these postgraduate programs will be available via distance
education.
