Agreements were reached with Apple
Computer Australia and Jaycar Electronics to fund scholarships,
worth a total of $8000, for first year Physics students. Apple Computer
Australia have donated $5000 for ten $500 scholarships, and Jaycar
Electronics $3000 for six. The scholarships will be offered for
the first time in 2001, with both companies expressing an ongoing
commitment to the project.
The corporate funding of scholarships
within first year breaks new ground for the School of Physics and
is sure to meet with an enthusiastic response from students.

Four companies became corporate sponsors
of First Year Physics in 2000, Apple Computer Australia, Jaycar
Electronics, Apple on Campus and Budden Nangle Michael & Hudson
Architects. Their sponsorships were worth $22,000 to the School
of Physics. Their support is part of an ongoing relationship with
specific outcomes for all parties involved but it is ultimately
our students who benefit via better facilities and resources.
Major donations were:
Laboratory equipment for PHYS1601 Computer
Applications in Experimental Science by Jaycar Electronics ($5000)
Attendance expenses for the Apple World Wide Developers Conference
in California, USA, by Apple Computer Australia. ($4500)
Four Vernier Data Loggers for use in the First Year Laboratory by
Apple Computer Australia. ($2000)
Mr Gabriel Caus and Mr Anthony Frith
conducted the negotiations on behalf of the school and extend their
