Continuing Education
Over the past year, through the Faculty
of Arts of Social Sciences, UNSW has introduced a continuing education
program under the banner of "UNSW Professional". While
there is a wide range of courses on offer, so far there is only
one in the sciences - astronomy. Several of the School's General
Education offerings would make ideal courses for continuing education.
However they don't fit into the structured organisational regime
of the undergraduate program. With Astronomy I have taken the General
Education course I run by the same name, and developed it into a
single day's course, where I embark upon a whirlwind tour of all
of modern astronomy. Such a daunting prospect is made easier using
a multi-media approach, and the course combines Power Point presentations,
use of the web, audio-visual elements and even practical observing
to take us through the day.
Teaching planets, stars, galaxies and
cosmology, interweaved with astronomy on the internet, astronomy
in Antarctica and astronomy in the UNSW observatory, it is an intensive
session, but one I've found stimulating. With a motivated audience,
continually asking questions, the day passes all too quickly! I've
found the participants particularly appreciate the internet session.
Following upon an initial survey of astronomy, illustrating a web
page with links to selected astro-sites gives everyone something
to take away, and to continue their voyage of discovery at home.
Continuing Education certainly has a future at UNSW - there is a
growing and international market for the provision of courses asking
questions about life and the universe - one that can be tapped into
if we can crack how to produce suitable multi-media web-based courses.
