DURING 1999 TEN STUDENTS completed requirements for
admission to a PhD degree and one completed an MSc.
Many of these have gone to Postdoctoral positions overseas.
Some have taken jobs with private companies.

One of our students, Adam Micolich, was runner-up in the Australian
Institute of Physics (New South Wales Branch) annual Postgraduate
Awards Competition.
We also have students, presently enrolled, who are carrying out
projects in association with Cochlear Limited and with the Australian Navy.

A NEW EDITION of one of the School's widely read publications
has appeared. The original version of "How To Write A PhD Thesis" was written
in 1996 by Joe Wolfe. Since then, hard copy versions of the 6000
word document have been widely distributed by university graduate schools
and student organizations around the world. The latest version, and its
companion "How to survive a thesis defence"
have been updated and expanded to include tips suggested by previous readers.

In 1999, the English version of the web version of the document received
7000 visits, or about 20 per day, and the Spanish version over 2000. Of
course many of these visitors may be downloading it as a type
of procrastination.
