THIS YEAR John Webb, Charley Lineweaver and a team of
guest lecturers initiated a very popular general studies course "Are We Alone?"
a free-ranging review of all aspects of the mind-boggling question: "Are
We Alone?" The material includes discussions of the origin and
evolution of life, discoveries of new planetary systems, artificial intelligence,
current searches for radio signals from extraterrestrials, possible types of
life-forms, Einstein's relativity and space
travel. As a complement to the lectures, there is a series of debates in which
the lecturers often disagree with each other. The controversies and the
science behind the disputes are presented.

In addition to this popular general studies course "Are We Alone?", in
the second session of 2000 a more quantitative version will be
introduced as a science subject.
