A MAJOR REDEVELOPMENT of first year teaching commenced in
1999 emphasising our students, their environment and the relevance
of Physics to the sciences, engineering and everyday life as seen through links to technologies we all rely on.
The Main Teaching Laboratory and Study Area were completely
refurbished to match the new image UNSW is projecting, the purchase of stylish iMacs and new experimental
equipment complements this.
A major curriculum revamp matched our new image. The laboratory
exercise
topics will coincide with each week's lectures, subject materials have
been rewritten, students will work in teams
and there is a renewed emphasis on face-to-face teaching. Two new
courses, 'Life Science Physics' and 'Concepts in Engineering Physics' have been
added to attract students from those growing areas.

A new web based IT system to support learning and provide information
to staff and students was developed under the direction of the IT Director
Gabriel Caus.
In a final bold step for a teaching group we have attracted major
sponsors. Jaycar Electronics is providing equipment and $3500 in
scholarships, Apple Australia an iMac per year as a prize and Apple on Campus is
providing equipment to maintain our iMacs.
"We want the best First Year experience in Australia," commented First
Year Director Richard Newbury.
