THEORIES UNIFYING GRAVITY and other interactions suggest that
the fundamental constants can have temporal and spatial variation in
the expanding Universe. We demonstrated that the sensitivity to the variation of
the fine structure constant can be improved by an order of magnitude by
comparing the spectra of heavy and light atoms, since the frequencies in heavy
atoms have large relativistic corrections. Realization of this idea has
already produced very interesting results.
